Netflix has announced a new Stranger Things series. It is called Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure. It is a live-action prequel set in 1955, and it is coming to Netflix in 2028.
The news dropped on Friday, November 6, Stranger Things Day. That is the date in the show when Will Byers went missing back in 1983. Netflix shared a short teaser with the announcement, and it gives away the time and place in its first few seconds.
What the teaser shows
The teaser opens on a bike left on its side outside a fenced-off area at night. A radio on the bike crackles with static as "Sh-Boom" by The Chords plays. The camera moves past barbed wire and a sign that reads "Restricted Area". Under it, a warning says: "Photography is prohibited. Use of deadly force authorised."
Then a title card gives the date and place: "April 19, 1955. Marion, Nevada." Thunder cracks, the sky opens up, and the year 2028 appears on screen. Netflix's tagline for the show is simple: "Before Hawkins, there was Marion."
Who is making it
Matt and Ross Duffer created the show with Kate Trefry, a longtime Stranger Things writer who wrote the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow. Trefry is the showrunner and an executive producer. The Duffers are executive producers too. Joe Wright, who directed Pride & Prejudice and Atonement, directs the first three episodes and executive-produces. Filming takes place in New Mexico.
It is Netflix's second big TV announcement of the week. Black Doves Season 2 arrived on Thursday with all six episodes at once, and it opened at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from its first eight reviews.
Where it fits in the story
Other Worlds takes place before the original series, which began in 2016, and before The First Shadow, the stage play set in 1959. The play's story involves an experiment in Nevada, and the new show goes back further, to Marion in 1955. It will have new heroes and new villains. No cast has been announced yet.
