Copenhagen-based international sales banner DR Sales has officially picked up global rights to "Father’s House," an ambitious hybrid project examining the insular world of a radical Christian sect. Featuring performances from Danish actors David Dencik ("No Time to Die") and Trine Dyrholm ("Queen of Hearts"), the production blends dramatic reenactments with documentary filmmaking to explore systemic psychological control and manipulation.

The acquisition comes just ahead of high-profile festival berths, with the project selected for the international documentary competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and the Signed section at IDFA. Produced by Pernille Rose Grønkjær and Malthe Koch for Danish Documentary, the title was backed by Nordic public broadcasters DR, NRK, and SVT, and is being presented as either a 90-minute feature or a two-part television series.

Uncovering the Legacy of Denmark's Faderhuset

The narrative centers on Faderhuset, a controversial Danish Christian movement that officially ceased operations as a congregation in 2013 after operating since the 1990s. The film investigates reported accounts of violence, exorcisms, speaking in tongues, and militant religious practices through the lived experiences of three former adherents.

Rather than relying purely on archival material or traditional talking-head interviews, "Father’s House" uses reenactments directed and guided by the ex-members themselves. Dyrholm portrays the organization's leader, Ruth Evensen (now Ruth Kristiansen). Dencik appears as former member Jerry, while Laura Kronborg Kjær takes on the role of Camilla, an insider who spent seven years inside the group before defecting and establishing the support NGO InsideOut.

A Collaborative Directing Effort and Meta-Documentary Format

"Father’s House" brought together a directing team composed of documentary filmmakers Andreas Koefoed ("The Lost Leonardo") and Eva Mulvad ("Enemies of Happiness"), alongside longtime film editor Adam Nielsen ("The Investigation"), who makes his co-directing debut. Mulvad was initially inspired to pursue the subject after reading a memoir by Camilla Louise Johnson, who later acted as a crucial liaison between the production team and other defectors.

Faced with a complete absence of historical footage from inside the sect's private activities, the directors chose a hybrid form inspired by previous meta-narrative non-fiction works like Kaouther Ben Hania's "Four Daughters" and Kaspar Astrup's "The Invention of Dr. Nakamats." A preliminary test shoot uniting Dyrholm and Kronborg Kjær alongside the real Johnson confirmed that examining the filmmaking process itself allowed the team to construct the piece around emotional and psychological dilemmas rather than a standard chronology.

Key Production Details and Festival Lineup

Beyond exploring the insular realities of Faderhuset, the filmmakers noted that the project was shaped around the broader human need for belonging and vulnerability to psychological coercion. The creative team emphasized that examining how ordinary individuals surrender personal boundaries served as the primary thematic focus during the writing and production stages.

Release Strategy and Upcoming Rollout

DR Sales executive producer Kim Christiansen cited the film's originality and emotional impact upon reviewing the initial cut, paving the way for the company's worldwide representation push. DR Sales has previously managed distribution for prominent factual projects, including "Mr Nobody Against Putin" and "A New Kind of Wilderness."

Following its international festival showcases in Tallinn and Amsterdam, "Father’s House" will launch domestically in Denmark through distributor Camera Film, with a theatrical debut scheduled for November 19.
