Neurologist Issues Strict Limits on Concerts and Driving

Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the "Just The Way You Are" performer discussed the reality of his daily routine and long-term career outlook. Joel detailed that his specialist specifically prohibited driving and performing after warning him about the physical strain that concert performances impose on his brain.

According to Joel, his neurologist likened the physical impact of a live performance to experiencing head trauma. "Every time you do a show, it’s like you’re getting a concussion," Joel recalled being told by his medical team. Because of these concerns, the musician noted that any eventual determination about whether he can return to the stage will depend on additional evaluations, stating, "I don't know. I have to take a series of tests before I know."

Coping With Hydrocephalus and Auctioning Motorcycle Collection

Joel explained that the primary diagnosis behind these restrictions is hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder that has impaired his coordination behind the wheel. The condition has altered his personal lifestyle significantly, leading him to part with a beloved collection of personal vehicles.

Addressing the practical changes in his life, Joel revealed that he is auctioning off more than 70 motorcycles from his personal garage. "I have a condition called hydrocephalus, which makes driving a little bit iffy," Joel told The Hollywood Reporter, explaining his choice to step away from riding. "So I realized it’s time for me to turn it over to somebody else." The singer stated that financial returns from the multi-vehicle auction will benefit his philanthropic organization, The Joel Foundation.

Recent Personal Losses and Health Recovery Milestones

The medical hurdles come amid a difficult emotional period for Joel, who recently mourned the death of his close companion and longtime musical associate Jon Small. Following Small's passing, Joel shared an emotional tribute on Instagram to acknowledge his former bandmate's profound influence on his life.

In his tribute, Joel expressed the depth of his grief, writing, "Losing Jon has hit me in a way I have never experienced. It is difficult to imagine this world without him in it." The bereavement added to what has been a demanding season of personal setbacks for the veteran artist.

Current Outlook and Surgical Recovery

Despite the strict limitations and recent hardships, Joel noted meaningful progress in his health following a surgical intervention. The singer confirmed that undergoing surgery resulted in noticeable improvements to both his memory retention and physical balance.

Emphasizing his resilience in the face of ongoing health management, Joel made it clear that he remains engaged and present, stating, "I'm not going anywhere, I'm here. I'm still here." Further determinations regarding any potential return to live music will await the completion of his recommended medical testing.
