Music icon Chaka Khan is set to receive the Classic Soul Honor at the upcoming 2026 Soul Train Awards, celebrating an influential career that has spanned more than five decades across soul, R&B, and funk. The award highlights the singer-songwriter's lasting imprint on popular music, from her early breakthroughs fronting the band Rufus to her extensive solo catalog.

Over the course of her five-decade career, Khan has produced some of modern music's most recognizable tracks, including "Ain't Nobody," "Tell Me Something Good," "Sweet Thing," "I'm Every Woman," and "I Feel for You." Her artistry has earned her 11 Grammy Awards, including the Recording Academy's Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2023, she was formally inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, where she received the Musical Excellence Award.
BET Leadership Highlights Khan's Cultural Impact
BET president Louis Carr praised the veteran performer upon the announcement, highlighting both her technical prowess and cultural significance within the genre. Carr emphasized that Khan's legacy goes beyond commercial success, pointing to her ability to inspire subsequent generations of vocalists and musicians.
"Chaka Khan is the embodiment of soul music," Carr stated. "From her groundbreaking work with Rufus to a solo career that has produced some of the most iconic records in music history, she has continually expanded the possibilities of R&B and soul while inspiring generations of artists to find and own their voices. Honoring Chaka is a celebration of the music and cultural legacy that Soul Train has always embodied."
Production and Broadcast Plans for the 2026 Ceremony
The 2026 Soul Train Awards will air on November 27 across both BET and CBS. Jesse Collins Entertainment serves as the production company handling the annual celebration of Black music excellence.
The telecast features a veteran team of executive producers, led by Jesse Collins alongside Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay. Connie Orlando serves as the executive producer representing BET for the special event.
Television Slates Expand Across Documentaries and Comedy
The tribute announcement arrives amid several other notable television programming updates across major networks and streaming services. National Geographic announced that its one-hour ocean conservation special, "Expedition: Saving Our Seas," will debut on November 13 before streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. Narrated by Auli'i Cravalho and directed by Katharine Arthy, the documentary chronicles scientific teams from the National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Ocean Expeditions investigating marine changes across all five ocean basins, including a historic live sighting of a giant Antarctic gonate squid.
In scripted comedy, BET will roll out five bonus episodes of "Lot Patrol" from Manny Halley Productions beginning November 3. The project, created and written by Halley and Ernest L. Dancy, focuses on backlot security guards navigating Hollywood studio life and stars DeRay Davis, Carl Anthony Payne II, and Tamera Kissen. The addition of these bonus segments will bring the show's debut season to a total of 10 episodes.
Upcoming Streaming and Syndication Premieres
Documentary offerings are also expanding on other platforms, starting with "The Biggest Little Farm Series," a 12-episode sequel to the acclaimed 2019 documentary. Directed by John Chester and backed by the Artemis Rising Foundation, the follow-up series debuts November 8 on YouTube to explore how the Chester family's farm ecosystem has developed eight years later.
On November 19, Disney+ will premiere the ESPN-associated documentary special "The Pursuit: F1 Academy." Filmed across the 2025 racing calendar, the program follows Susie Wolff and rising drivers Doriane Pin, Maya Weug, Chloe Chambers, and Alisha Palmowski in the all-female motorsport series, premiering just ahead of the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix 2026.
Rounding out recent network scheduling moves, Hearst Media Production Group revealed that its community-service home renovation program "Home for Good," hosted by Art Edmonds, will return for its second season on January 9 on ABC stations nationwide as part of the "Weekend Adventure" educational block.
Audiences can watch Khan accept the Classic Soul Honor when the 2026 Soul Train Awards broadcast airs simultaneously on BET and CBS on November 27.
