Acclaimed actress and filmmaker Hiam Abbass has been chosen to receive an honorary tribute at the upcoming European Film Awards. The European Film Academy announced that Abbass will be presented with the award for European Achievement in World Cinema, recognizing her decades-long contributions to the international film industry.

Ceremony Details and Honorary Guest Status
The veteran performer will officially accept the honor during the 39th European Film Awards ceremony, scheduled to take place on January 16, 2027, in Athens. Abbass will also attend the event as the ceremony's honorary guest, marking a major milestone in her long-standing relationship with the European film community.
Her connection to the European Film Awards spans multiple decades. Abbass previously garnered two nominations for her collaborations with director Eran Riklis, earning a nod for the People’s Choice Award in 2005 for "Syrian Bride" and an actress nomination in 2008 for "Lemon Tree." Her performance in "Lemon Tree" also earned her an Asia Pacific Screen Award. More recently, the academy recognized "Bye Bye Tiberias," a 2024 European Film Awards-nominated documentary directed by her daughter, Lina Soualem, which documents Abbass's life, family bonds, and background in her home village of Deir Hanna.
Early Life and Journey to International Stages
Abbass was born in Nazareth into a Palestinian family that was displaced into exile in 1948. She began developing her acting craft at the Palestinian National Theatre El-Hakawati located in East Jerusalem, a venue that faced frequent closures by Israeli authorities.
During a European theatrical tour, Abbass made the choice to depart Palestine for London. Following that move, she established her permanent residence in Paris during the late 1980s, where she continued to build her performance career on both stage and screen.
A Prolific Screen Career and Directorial Work
Abbass stepped into her first leading film role in 1989, starring in Ariane Mnouchkine’s "La nuit miraculeuse." Over the course of the following decades, she assembled a portfolio comprising more than 100 motion pictures spanning international independent projects and major global releases.
Her credits include key roles in Raja Amari's "Satin Rouge," Hany Abu-Assad's "Paradise Now," Tom McCarthy's "The Visitor," and Denis Villeneuve's science fiction feature "Blade Runner 2049." In addition to screen acting, Abbass has worked behind the camera as a director. Her feature film "Inheritance" was showcased on the international festival circuit, screening at Venice Days in 2012 as well as festivals in Gijón and São Paulo.
Upcoming Tribute in Athens
The honorary award presented by the European Film Academy will place Abbass at the center of the organization's celebration in Greece. The event on January 16, 2027, will formally commemorate her international body of work as the film community gathers in Athens.
