Malaysian distribution and production company Abnormal Studios has taken a major step into the fall industry circuit, showcasing an expansive Asian Contents & Film Market lineup in Busan topped by a Cambodian reimagining of the 2010 South Korean drama "Wedding Dress." Ahead of its upcoming local debut, the adaptation represents the company's leading market title as it engages international buyers in South Korea.

Revisiting 'Wedding Dress' in Phnom Penh
The original South Korean feature, directed by Kwon Hyung-jin, centered on a poignant relationship between a dying mother and her young daughter. For this brand-new adaptation, the production shifts the setting to Phnom Penh, where the narrative focuses on a single mother named Dalin. Working tirelessly as a bridal gown designer, Dalin's demanding career has inadvertently caused emotional distance between herself and her 10-year-old daughter, Mina.

Everything changes when Dalin receives a terminal diagnosis. Faced with limited time, she reframes her daily life to prepare Mina for a secure and happy future without her. The project serves as the feature directorial debut of Huang Han, an emerging filmmaker whose prior cinematic efforts have previously screened at major international platforms including the Berlin, Busan, and Pingyao film festivals. The Cambodian retelling aims to maintain the core emotional framework of the 2010 film while grounding its visual and cultural texture within local everyday realities.
Horror and Genre Titles in Pre-Production and Development
Abnormal Studios is also spotlighting several notable genre projects on its Busan roster. Venezuelan director Alejandro Hidalgo, recognized for "The Exorcism of God" and his breakout debut "The House at the End of Time," is helming "The Hungry One." The upcoming horror film follows Emily, an American woman who travels alongside her Chinese husband to his family's ancestral home in Malaysia during the 15-day Hungry Ghost Festival. As supernatural barriers fall, dangerous encounters begin to threaten her survival. Producers are currently finalizing the project's final round of financing while in pre-production.
In addition to Hidalgo's cross-cultural horror, the slate features "Ali & Ben's Spicy Meats," an independent black comedy and cannibal horror film created by Feisal and Iskander Azizuddin. The plot revolves around two desperate companions who become consumed by power after inventing a hit spicy beef jerky made using human flesh.
Pan-Asian Features Across Drama, Fantasy, and Rom-Coms
Broadening its genre scope, Abnormal Studios is handling the Malaysian sci-fi fantasy "Mimpi Kita: Castle in the Air." Exploring filial duties through a conflict between a virtual simulation and a dystopian reality, the title previously participated in the NAFF Project Market's It Project section at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival.
The distribution package also features high-profile regional projects, such as "Because of You Ka Kui," an homage celebrating legendary Canto rock musician Wong Ka Kui, and "Next Stop, Somewhere," starring veteran Hong Kong performer Anthony Wong. Other Southeast Asian offerings from Cambodia and Malaysia include "Far Away Close to You," "The Ghost of Banana Tree," "Silent Murders," "KL Love Story," and the supernatural thriller "Her Deadly Eyes."
Abnormal Studios Expands Its Regional Footprint
Operating as a subsidiary of Westec Media Limited, Abnormal Studios has rapidly established itself as a regional heavyweight since initiating film acquisition and distribution operations in 2020. The company has overseen the rollout of more than 400 titles, releasing roughly 100 motion pictures each year across territories including Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Nepal, and Mongolia.
Its wider catalog also includes commercial Indonesian hits such as "The Doll," "Mata Batin," and "Rumah Kentang" franchises, along with popular romance titles like "Sunshine Becomes You" and the "Eiffel... I'm in Love" franchise. Having previously seen regional distribution successes with films such as "How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies" and "Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In," Abnormal Studios continues to push regional theatrical and market distribution forward through its latest Busan offerings.
