Robert Downey Jr. and Pedro Pascal gave Marvel fans the Halloween moment of the year, swapping their Avengers: Doomsday characters in a video Downey Jr. shared on Instagram on Saturday, October 31. Downey Jr., who plays Victor von Doom in the film, dressed as Pascal’s Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, while Pascal wore Doctor Doom’s cape and silver mask.
Downey Jr. captioned the video: “Victor. Richard. Costume swap!” In the clip, the pair unmask to reveal the switch, with Downey Jr. joking “cross-dressing!” as Pascal laughed beside him. Pascal added to the joke by wearing the Doom hood and mask over a green MIT hoodie, a detail fans immediately seized on as a nod to the shared college history of Reed Richards and Victor von Doom in Marvel Comics, where the two were roommates before becoming arch-enemies.
The pair even took the costumes out trick-or-treating, with Pascal sharing clips of the two walking the streets among other costumed revellers. Fans flooded social media with reactions, with many asking whether the swap was “foreshadowing” for the film itself, in which Doom and Mister Fantastic are expected to be at the centre of the conflict.
Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, is scheduled to open in cinemas on December 18, 2026, setting up a major holiday box-office clash with Dune: Part Three. The film marks Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe more than seven years after Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame, this time as the villain, while Pascal joined the franchise as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in 2025.
Pascal is also currently headlining our Behemoth! trailer coverage, where he plays cellist Alex Serian. The swap landed in the middle of a Halloween weekend packed with star costumes, from Heidi Klum’s towering hand costume at her 25th annual party to the Marvel-flavoured tribute in our Zendaya Halloween post — but few looks travelled as fast as Doom and Mister Fantastic trading places.
