Raye is heading to Hollywood. The Grammy-winning singer will voice a character in Benny Safdie's new film Lizard Music, and she will also write original music for it.
Deadline first reported the news on 30 October. Raye joins a cast led by Dwayne Johnson, who also produces the film. The movie mixes live action with CGI, and it is set to open in cinemas on Christmas Day, 25 December 2027.
Lizard Music is based on Daniel Pinkwater's 1976 novel of the same name. Safdie wrote the script himself. The story follows a boy who finds a secret late-night broadcast of lizards playing strange music. He teams up with an older man nicknamed the Chicken Man, played by Johnson, and the Chicken Man's companion, an 85-year-old chicken named Claudia, to track down where the music comes from.
Raye's exact character has not been named yet. Reports say she will voice an animated character in the live-action and CGI mix. How many songs she will write has also not been confirmed.
The cast around her is deep. Alongside Johnson, it includes Theo Leber as the boy, plus Alicia Silverstone, Tim Heidecker, Regina Hall, Andrew Dice Clay, Colman Domingo, Jeff Goldblum, Rachel McAdams and David Krumholtz.
It has been a big year for Raye. She won the Mercury Prize for her 2026 album This Music May Contain Hope, her first album to top the UK chart. She was also cast this year in Yann Demange's crime film Lineage. Now she has two film roles on the way, plus the music for one of them.
For a singer, writing a film's music is a different job from writing pop songs. But Raye has built her name on writing her own material, and this project puts her sound at the heart of a major studio film.
