Pierce Brosnan is 73 and still at the centre of the James Bond conversation. This week he gave his view on who should play 007 next. It was not a casting announcement. It was a former Bond talking like a fan, and fans listened.
Brosnan was born Pierce Brendan Brosnan on 16 May 1953 in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland. He was an only child. His father, a carpenter, left when he was very young, and he was largely brought up by relatives. The family moved to London when he was a boy. He went to the Elliott School in Putney, trained in commercial illustration at Saint Martin's School of Art, and then spent three years at Drama Centre London, graduating in 1975.
His first big break was Remington Steele, the US detective series that ran from 1982 to 1987. He played the title character, a con man who takes on the identity of a detective. The show made him a star in America. It also cost him his first shot at Bond: when the show was renewed in 1986, he stayed under contract, and Timothy Dalton took The Living Daylights instead.
Bond came in the end, and it came big. Brosnan played 007 in four films: GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002). GoldenEye revived the series after a six-year gap, and Brosnan's smooth, witty Bond became the face of the franchise for a new generation.
He never let Bond box him in. He played the new boyfriend in Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), a volcano scientist in Dante's Peak (1997), and the thief at the heart of The Thomas Crown Affair (1999). He sang — bravely, by his own admission — as Sam Carmichael in Mamma Mia! (2008) and its 2018 sequel. He played a hitman with a crisis of conscience in The Matador (2005), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination, and a former prime minister in The Ghost Writer (2010).
Recent years have been busy. He played Kent Nelson, also known as Doctor Fate, in Black Adam (2022). In 2025 he appeared as spy boss Arthur Stiglitz in Black Bag and as Ron Ritchie in Netflix's The Thursday Murder Club. On TV he plays Conrad Harrigan, the head of an Irish crime family, in Paramount+'s MobLand. Season 2 is airing through autumn 2026, with a finale due on 20 November, and a third season has already been renewed.
His personal life has had real hardship in it. He married Australian actress Cassandra Harris in 1980. She died of ovarian cancer in 1991. He adopted her two children from an earlier relationship, Charlotte and Christopher. Charlotte also died of ovarian cancer, in 2013. He met journalist Keely Shaye Smith in Mexico in 1994, and they married in Ireland in 2001. They have two sons, Dylan, born in 1997, and Paris, born in 2001. He also has a son, Sean, born in 1983, from his marriage to Harris. He became a US citizen in 2004, alongside his Irish citizenship.
That brings us back to Bond. In a Vanity Fair interview published on 3 November 2026, Brosnan was asked about the search for Craig's successor. He praised every man on the reported list, then singled out one name, just as Jack Lowden did when he spoke about the rumours recently. "All the men who are on the list now are actors I admire," he said. "Callum Turner is someone I've worked with, and he's so strong."
Brosnan and Turner worked together on The Only Living Boy in New York (2017), where Turner played his son. Brosnan stressed he has no inside knowledge. "Oh, I'm just an audience member now," he said. "I'm just the man in the street who is eager to see who is going to play this epic role of cinematic history." He also praised the new film's director, Denis Villeneuve of the Dune films, saying: "I think we are going to be blown away."
No new Bond has been cast or announced. But when a man who wore the tuxedo four times speaks, people listen. Brosnan closed with a wish for whoever gets the part: "I wish him the very best of life and strength and courage."
