Olivia Rodrigo is doing Christmas this year. Her first-ever holiday song, "Take Me Home (4 Christmas)", is out tonight, and it comes with a music video starring two very unexpected names.
She announced the song herself on Instagram on Monday, with the cover art: her sitting on the floor in a red Santa hat and red lipstick. It is her first Christmas song, and it is an original, not a cover.
When it comes out
The song drops at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET tonight, Thursday 5 November. The video premieres at the same moment, so fans on the East Coast get both at 8 p.m.
| Where you are | Release time |
|---|---|
| Los Angeles (PT) | 5 p.m., Thursday 5 November |
| New York (ET) | 8 p.m., Thursday 5 November |
| London (GMT) | 1 a.m., Friday 6 November |
| Manila | 9 a.m., Friday 6 November |
The single is out through Interscope Records on streaming services. Rodrigo also has a 7-inch vinyl and a cassette up for pre-order, with a B-side called "Miss This Christmas". The vinyl reaches Target stores on 6 November.
The video stars Cynthia Nixon and Ben Marshall
The video is the real talking point. It stars Cynthia Nixon, best known as Miranda in Sex and the City, and Ben Marshall, the Saturday Night Live cast member from the Please Don't Destroy trio.
It is a strange mix on paper, and that is the point. Rodrigo has a habit of picking video co-stars nobody sees coming, and this one has already got people talking before a single frame has aired.
Who made the song
Rodrigo wrote the track with her longtime collaborator Dan Nigro and songwriter Amy Allen. Nigro also produced it. It is the same team behind much of her best work, and the song was built as a standalone single, not part of a new album.
She is in the middle of her Unraveled Tour, so the Christmas song lands while she is still on the road. It is a quick festive detour, and the timing is no accident: a holiday song in early November has all season to grow.
What we know so far
No lyrics have been shared yet, and Rodrigo has not said what the song is about. The title gives one clue: it is a song about going home for Christmas, not a party track.
Her fans have waited a long time for this. She has never put out a holiday song before, and Christmas music is a crowded field. But a first Christmas song from one of the biggest pop stars in the world, with a video like this one, is hard to miss.
Rodrigo's year has been a busy one, and her story is worth a read if you are new to her. Our Olivia Rodrigo biography covers her rise, her albums and the tour she is on right now.
It has been a big week for new music on the site. Raye joined Dwayne Johnson's Lizard Music with a voice role and original music for the Christmas 2027 film. Rodrigo's song is the one landing tonight, though, and it is out in a matter of hours.
