This week, Matt Damon popped up where no one expected him: as a background actor in The Gilded Age. He walked across the street in full Victorian dress, next to David Letterman, for about six seconds. It was a joke, and a good one. It also fit Damon well. He started out as a background actor himself, long before he became one of Hollywood's most trusted stars.

Damon, 56, has built a career that most actors would envy. He writes, he produces, and he leads films that make money and win awards. He has done it for nearly 40 years without ever becoming a tabloid regular. That quiet steadiness is part of his appeal.

The films that made him

Damon's first film role was a tiny part in Mystic Pizza in 1988. He was still a teenager. The big break came in 1997, when he and his childhood friend Ben Affleck wrote and starred in Good Will Hunting. The film won them the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Damon was 27.

After that, the roles came fast. He played a soldier in Saving Private Ryan (1998), a con man in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), and a thief in the Ocean's films. Then came Jason Bourne, the amnesiac spy he played across four films from 2002 to 2016. Bourne changed action films. The fight scenes were fast, close and shaky, and everyone copied them for years.

He kept mixing big films with smaller ones. The Departed (2006), True Grit (2010), The Martian (2015) and Oppenheimer (2023) all showed different sides of him. In The Martian, he carried almost the whole film alone, talking to a camera on Mars. He won a Golden Globe for it. In Oppenheimer, he played General Leslie Groves, the man who ran the Manhattan Project.
