Nicolas Cage is back in the arms business. The first teaser for Lords of War landed on Wednesday, November 4. It brings Cage back as Yuri Orlov, more than two decades after the first film. Bill Skarsgård plays his son.

The teaser is short, but it sets the tone fast. It opens on scorched ground covered in shell casings, with the words "HE'S BACK" on screen. Then Cage turns up in a suit, standing in the wreckage of a battlefield and looking straight at the camera.

What is Lords of War about?

Yuri Orlov finds out his estranged son Anton has built his own weapons empire. Anton, played by Skarsgård, is a mercenary who runs a private army and uses America's wars in the Middle East to grow his business. Father and son are now after the same ground, and neither plans to back down. The first film followed Yuri as he built his trade in the 1980s and 1990s. The sequel asks what happens when the family business has two bosses.

Andrew Niccol wrote and directed the first film, and he is back to write and direct this one. The sequel was first announced at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023. It came together late in 2025, and Vertical will release it in cinemas across the US on January 22, 2027.

Why fans have waited so long

Lord of War came out in 2005 and grew into a cult hit over the years. Yuri was partly inspired by real-life arms dealer Viktor Bout, and Cage's cold, funny turn as the gunrunner is still one of his best-known roles. This is the first time Cage has returned to one of his old characters this long after the fact. The teaser has already got fans talking, and the father-versus-son hook gives the sequel its own story instead of a straight re-run.

It has been a big week for trailers. Godzilla Minus Zero opened in cinemas today, and the second Cliff Booth trailer dropped on Friday. But a Cage sequel 21 years in the making is the one with the longest wait behind it.
