Veteran actress Stephanie March is headed back to the courtroom, reprising her beloved character Alexandra Cabot in the ongoing run of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Cabot, who served as an assistant district attorney working closely with the precinct's detectives, stands as one of the most recognizable figures from the procedural's long history. The upcoming appearance will add to March's extensive run with the franchise, having already played the character across more than 100 episodes.

Alexandra Cabot's Long History on the Procedural

March initially joined the central cast of "Law & Order: SVU" during its second season in 2000 and stayed through Season 5 in 2003. Her original departure from the main roster was marked by an intense storyline in which Cabot faked her own death to enter the federal witness protection program after facing threats linked to a case.

Following that high-stakes exit, March frequently revisited the universe created by Dick Wolf. She returned for guest stints in Seasons 6, 10, 11, and 13. Her most recent appearance on "SVU" came in Season 19 back in 2018. Outside the flagship series, March also led the same character in the 2006 legal drama "Conviction," a short-lived spinoff that expanded the legal arm of the franchise.

March's Career Beyond the Legal Franchise

While March is widely recognized for her turns as Cabot, she has accumulated a diverse lineup of roles across film and television. In 2009, she appeared in the Ricky Gervais comedy film "The Invention of Lying," later followed by roles in the 2017 independent drama "Who We Are Now" and Laura Kosann's 2019 mockumentary feature "The Social Ones."

In recent years, March has collaborated on prominent projects, including Ava DuVernay's 2022 series "Naomi" as well as DuVernay's 2023 feature film "Origin." Additionally, March appeared in the 2023 Amazon Prime Video mystery series "Harlan Coben’s Shelter."

The Sustained Legacy of 'Special Victims Unit'

Created by Dick Wolf, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" holds the distinction of being the longest-running primetime drama in American television history. The series currently airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m., produced by Universal Television in association with Wolf Entertainment.

The current ensemble lineup features lead star Mariska Hargitay alongside Ice T, Peter Scanavino, Kelli Giddish, Kevin Kane, Aimé Donna Kelly, and Corey Cott. Wolf and Hargitay serve as executive producers on the series with Michele Fazekas, Kenneth Brown, Rebecca McGill, Anastasia Puglisi, and Peter Jankowski.

March's forthcoming appearance in the ninth episode of Season 28 will mark her first time stepping back into Cabot's shoes on the drama since her 2018 guest spot.
