Paramount has officially secured the screen rights to Pierce Brown's best-selling science-fiction book franchise "Red Rising," putting a feature film adaptation of the debut novel into active development. Renowned filmmaker Francis Lawrence, known for directing multiple installments of "The Hunger Games" cinematic universe, has boarded the production to direct the project.

Adapting the Martian Rebellion

The planned motion picture is based on Brown's inaugural 2014 novel, which introduced audiences to a dystopian future where humanity has spread across colonized planets governed by a strict, color-coded hierarchy. At the bottom of this societal structure are the Reds, an exploited working class consigned to grueling mining operations beneath the surface of Mars, while the elite Golds hold ultimate dominion across the solar system.

The central narrative tracks Darrow of Lykos, a Martian miner whose life is upended by personal tragedy, driving him into the fold of an underground revolutionary movement seeking vengeance against the ruling class. To dismantle the regime from within, Darrow undergoes a grueling physical overhaul to disguise himself as a Gold, eventually infiltrating an elite military academy designed to groom prospective leaders for the upper ranks.

Screenwriter Justin Rhodes has been tapped to draft the feature adaptation. The creative team also features Brown serving as an executive producer on the project, ensuring the original author remains involved in translating his universe to the screen.

Production Team and Lawrence's Franchise Background

Producing duties on the project will be handled by Lawrence and Cameron MacConomy through their About.Blank banner, collaborating alongside producer Francesco Goedhuis.

Lawrence brings significant experience in managing high-stakes literary adaptations. He has helmed every entry in the "Hunger Games" franchise, ranging from earlier franchise entries through 2023's "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," as well as the prequel "Sunrise on the Reaping." Outside of Panem, his directing credits include the adaptation of Stephen King's "The Long Walk."

The Expanding Literary Universe

The acquisition arrives as Brown's universe continues to expand on the printed page. Since the arrival of the original book in 2014, the saga has evolved through five subsequent releases: "Golden Son," "Morning Star," "Iron Gold," "Dark Age," and "Lightbringer."

A seventh entry, titled "Red God," is slated to serve as the concluding installment of the epic book run. The series has built a dedicated readership drawn to its intricate political maneuvering and brutal sci-fi action.

With Paramount securing the foundational rights and assembling its core creative team, the adaptation enters early development as the studio looks to translate Brown's expansive sci-fi saga for theatergoers.
