The harrowing mid-air terror plot aboard a FlyDubai flight that was thwarted by its crew and passengers is headed to the big screen. International production outfit Dori Media Group and Mumbai-based production company Sphereorigin have partnered to develop a narrative feature film dramatizing the September 30 incident, which saw an airline captain and Israeli travelers prevent a catastrophic crash.

The project was fast-tracked during the Mipcom entertainment market in Cannes, where representatives from both companies finalized terms for the co-production. The planned film aims to tell the inspirational story of Capt. Smit Machchhar, the Indian pilot who suffered stab wounds while stopping an alleged attack by his co-pilot, alongside the passengers who intervened to secure the cockpit.
A Harrowing Terror Plot Thwarted in Mid-Air
The incident took place on September 30 aboard a FlyDubai flight bound for Ben-Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. The plane was carrying predominantly Israeli citizens returning home from visits to Dubai. According to reports and passenger accounts, the co-pilot attempted a terror plot, allegedly stabbing Capt. Machchhar and seizing the aircraft's controls in an effort to crash the jet into Ben-Gurion airport.
During the altercation, the plane reportedly plunged over 14,000 feet in approximately 30 seconds. Despite sustaining severe injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door from the inside, alerting those in the cabin to the struggle. The commotion prompted a group of passengers to rush forward and overpower the suspect inside the cockpit. Two off-duty pilots who were traveling on the flight subsequently took the controls, guiding the plane to a safe emergency landing in Riyadh after Saudi Arabia granted permission for the Israel-affiliated flight to land.
Rapid Deal Making at Mipcom
The partnership between Dori Media Group and Sphereorigin came together quickly on the ground in France. Sphereorigin managing director Sunjoy Waddhwa noted that multiple Indian broadcasters and streaming services reached out with interest in bringing the pilot's and passengers' actions to the screen. Waddhwa then reached out to Dori Media on October 11, just ahead of Mipcom's opening.
Dori Media chief Nadav Palti met with the Sphereorigin team at the company's booth in the Palais, formalizing the development agreement by the afternoon of October 14. The transaction was brokered on behalf of both companies by Subhadarshi Tripathy. Palti highlighted that the rapid development process was fueled by the shared conviction that the incident—which ended without passenger fatalities—represented an extraordinary triumph of courage under pressure.
Production Plans and Ongoing Aftermath
Founded in 2002, Sphereorigin is partnering on the project with Dori Media Group, which was established in 1996 and operates production hubs across Tel Aviv, Zurich, and Buenos Aires. The companies are currently searching for a director and screenwriter to shape the narrative, targeting an accelerated production and release schedule for next year.
The real-world aftermath continues to draw significant attention. Capt. Machchhar, who is currently recovering from his injuries, has been hailed as a national hero in both India and Israel, even recounting his experience in a high-profile video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Meanwhile, the accused co-pilot remains in custody facing prosecution by authorities in the United Arab Emirates as development on the feature adaptation moves forward.
