The BBC has unveiled the cast and creative details for its next annual festive ghost story, tapping Martin Freeman and Jim Broadbent to lead an adaptation of Charles Dickens' dark tale "The Bride's Chamber." The seasonal special, which has become a staple of British holiday television, is being created once again by writer and actor Mark Gatiss.

An 1858 Tale of Obsession and Vengeance
Originally published in 1858, "The Bride's Chamber" is recognized as one of the darkest works associated with Dickens, written collaboratively with author Wilkie Collins. Set in the same year as its publication, the period thriller centers on a bitter, rejected suitor who plots to claim a young woman's fortune through deceit and marriage. His lethal scheme ultimately traps him in his own psychological and supernatural torment.
Recent BBC Festive Ghost Story Specials Created by Mark Gatiss
| Project Title | Original Author | Lead Cast / Details |
|---|---|---|
| The Bride's Chamber | Charles Dickens & Wilkie Collins | Martin Freeman, Jim Broadbent |
| The Room in the Tower | E.F. Benson | Aired previous Christmas |
| Woman of Stone | E. Nesbit | Aired two Christmases ago |
| Lot No. 249 | Arthur Conan Doyle | Aired three Christmases ago |
Gatiss described the narrative as an overlooked gem from the Victorian era. "It's unusual to find a Dickens rarity, but this is it," Gatiss said. "A weird and nasty little treasure which lurks within a work co-written with the great Wilkie Collins. A lonely inn, an incognito traveller and a ghastly tale of warped obsession. Merry Christmas!"
Cast and Creative Collaborators
Freeman, known for his work in "The Hobbit" and "Sherlock," joins Academy Award winner Broadbent, whose credits include "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" and the "Bridget Jones" franchise. The ensemble cast also features Adrian Scarborough ("The Chelsea Detective"), Joe Armstrong ("Happy Valley"), India Fowler ("The Agency"), and Lewis Shepherd ("Dear England").
The production marks a notable creative reunion between Gatiss and Freeman, who previously spent years working together on the hit BBC series "Sherlock," in which Gatiss co-created the show and played Mycroft Holmes opposite Freeman's Dr. John Watson. Gatiss also previously worked alongside Broadbent in the drama "London Spy," though their shared presence in "Game of Thrones" did not involve common scenes.
Production Details and the BBC Ghost Story Tradition
Filming for the television special has already wrapped, with principal photography having taken place earlier this year on location at Ingatestone Hall in Essex, UK. Adorable Media is handling production with Isibeal Ballance serving as producer, alongside Mark Bell acting as commissioning editor for the BBC. International distribution will be managed by BBC Studios.
"The Bride's Chamber" marks the ninth Christmas ghost story installment helmed by Gatiss for the broadcaster. Previous holiday specials adapted other classic supernatural literature, including E.F. Benson's "The Room in the Tower" last year, E. Nesbit's "Woman of Stone" the year prior, and Arthur Conan Doyle's "Lot No. 249" three Christmases ago.
Part of a Broader Dickens Winter Programming Slate
The ghost story arrives as part of an expanded seasonal lineup spotlighting the works and world of Dickens across the BBC network. The upcoming winter slate includes a three-part documentary examining how Victorian London's nighttime streets inspired the author's writing, as well as an adaptation of "A Tale of Two Cities" starring Kit Harington.
"The Bride's Chamber" is scheduled to air in the United Kingdom on BBC Two over the upcoming festive season and will be available for streaming domestically on BBC iPlayer.
