Annabelle Wallis is examining complex psychological terrain in her latest role, reteaming with Russell Crowe in the Netflix film Unabomber. The Oxford-born actor, who spent her formative childhood years in Portugal before returning to the United Kingdom to pursue acting, has built an eclectic career across high-profile film and television projects, frequently holding her own opposite some of the industry's most intense leading men.

Annabelle Wallis Reflects on 'Unabomber,' Steven Knight's 'Peaky Blinders' Regret, and Teases New James Wan Project

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Wallis addressed the ethical questions surrounding her portrayal of real-life psychologist Christiana Morgan in the Janus Metz Pedersen-directed feature. She also reflected on creator Steven Knight's lingering thoughts regarding her character's fate in Peaky Blinders and revealed a possible upcoming collaboration with filmmaker James Wan.

Tackling Psychological Trauma in 'Unabomber'

In Unabomber, Wallis portrays Christiana Morgan, who co-developed the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) alongside Harvard psychology professor Henry Murray, played by Crowe. During the late 1950s, Morgan and Murray conducted a controversial, high-stress psychological experiment on a 16-year-old Harvard student, Ted Kaczynski—played in the film by Jacob Tremblay—subjecting him to roughly 200 hours of grueling sessions.

While the real Kaczynski historically labeled the study the worst experience of his life while denying that it drove him toward domestic terrorism, Wallis firmly views the experiment as deeply impactful. "In my opinion, I do believe that the study had an impact," Wallis stated, noting the profound vulnerability of an adolescent under such extreme conditions. She also considered the moral dilemma her historical counterpart faced, noting she had to imagine Morgan harboring private guilt over manipulating a young student to empathize with the role in that male-dominated academic environment.

Working Dynamics With Hollywood Leading Men

Unabomber marks another collaboration between Wallis and Crowe, following appearances in The Mummy (2017) and Showtime's limited series The Loudest Voice (2019), as well as both appearing in the cast of Ridley Scott's Body of Lies (2008), though Wallis' scenes were largely cut. Wallis has frequently worked alongside prominent, commanding actors, including Tom Cruise, Jason Statham, Jude Law, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Cillian Murphy.

Wallis attributed her comfort with strong personalities to her active, "tomboy" upbringing in Portugal, where she spent time doing motocross and horseback riding in a social, male-dominated household alongside her brother. She explained that she focuses entirely on seeing past established public personas to uncover genuine humanity in scenes. "I want to connect to who they really are in their essence, and you can't avoid it with me," Wallis explained, describing how stripping away superficial defenses became an unexpected professional niche.

Steven Knight's 'Peaky Blinders' Regret and a Teased James Wan Reunion

Wallis originally broke out internationally as undercover operative Grace Burgess opposite Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby in Steven Knight's BBC drama Peaky Blinders. Grace was tragically killed off at the start of season three in 2016, right before the period series surged into a massive global phenomenon on Netflix. Although she returned as an apparition in season five, Wallis revealed that Knight has expressed hindsight regret about ending Grace's storyline so early.

According to Wallis, Knight has admitted that had he anticipated how deeply audiences would remain invested in Tommy and Grace's relationship years down the line, he might have chosen a different creative path. At the time of her exit, Wallis was transitioning into major studio roles, including Universal's The Mummy alongside Cruise.

Wallis also indicated that another creative partnership could be renewed in the near future. Having previously led James Wan's 2014 Conjuring spinoff Annabelle and his 2021 horror feature Malignant, Wallis shared that the filmmaker recently reached out directly with a teaser message. While no official project details have been finalized or formally announced, Wallis confirmed she remains eager to work with Wan whenever the opportunity arises.
