Luke Grimes has revealed that he has not been in contact with his former co-star Kevin Costner since the two concluded their work together on the hit Western drama "Yellowstone." Despite portraying a close-knit father and son on television for years, Grimes explained that their current lack of communication simply stems from their busy schedules and normal life transitions rather than personal conflict.

Speaking in an interview with USA Today, Grimes addressed where his relationship with Costner stands today following the completion of the flagship series created by Taylor Sheridan. The actor noted that there is no bad blood between them, pointing instead to the realities of demanding professional paths.
Moving On After the Dutton Family Saga
Grimes, who portrays youngest son Kayce Dutton, worked alongside Costner's family patriarch John Dutton across the multi-season run of "Yellowstone." The popular drama officially wrapped up its five-season arc in December 2024. While Grimes stayed with the program for the entirety of its run, Costner's character was written out and killed off prior to the final six episodes that comprised Season 5B.
Addressing their dynamic since parting ways on set, Grimes emphasized that there is no dramatic feud behind their silence. "I've never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together," Grimes explained. "Not for any other reason other than just, you know, we're both busy guys and life moves on."
Assessing Potential Cameos and Flashbacks in 'Marshals'
Following the conclusion of "Yellowstone," Grimes transitioned into leading the spin-off series "Marshals." When asked whether Costner could eventually appear in the new venture, Grimes expressed that while such an occurrence "would be cool," he doubted it would materialize at this point in the narrative.
Instead, Grimes highlighted a different creative direction he would prioritize if flashback scenes were ever considered for his character. He pointed to his on-screen wife, Monica Long Dutton, played by Kelsey Asbille, whose character died of cancer prior to the timeline where "Marshals" begins.
"I think, if there was a flashback, I'd probably rather it be with Monica than John," Grimes stated. "I think that'd be more poignant to the character, but we'll see." He added that while no discussions have occurred regarding Asbille's return, he would welcome the chance, noting, "There's been no conversation, but I sure would love it. I love working with her."
The Evolving Narrative of Kayce Dutton
Grimes' continued focus remains squarely on expanding Kayce Dutton's storyline beyond the confines of the Yellowstone Ranch. According to the official logline for "Marshals," the spin-off follows Kayce after he enlists in an elite unit of U.S. Marshals.
The series blends his background as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to tackle regional law enforcement challenges across Montana. The narrative centers on Kayce and his squad contending with the demands of family, their duties, and the psychological impact of being the final barrier against local violence.
"Marshals" debuted its first season earlier in the year in March, followed shortly by the premiere of its second season on Sunday, firmly establishing Kayce's solo journey independent of the original flagship cast.
