The Newport Beach Film Festival has announced that actress and producer Emmy Rossum will receive its outstanding performance in television award for an actress. The recognition highlights her starring role in the Hulu drama series Furious, created by Elizabeth Meriwether. In the series, Rossum portrays an FBI agent investigating and hunting a female serial killer, a performance that has garnered some of the strongest critical acclaim of her career.
Celebration Details and Live Podcast Recording
The festival tribute is scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 18, on the Mainstage at Fashion Island. The event will begin at 3 p.m. with an in-depth, career-retrospective conversation hosted by Scott Feinberg, executive editor of awards at The Hollywood Reporter. The interview will be recorded live in front of the festival audience for subsequent release on THR’s Awards Chatter podcast.
Following the interview session, the Newport Beach Film Festival will officially present Rossum with her television honor. Admission to the afternoon program is free to the public, though an RSVP is required to attend. The honor forms part of the programming for the 27th annual Newport Beach Film Festival, which runs from Oct. 15 through Oct. 22.
Festival co-founder and CEO Gregg Schwenk praised Rossum's work across multiple creative disciplines in a statement announcing the tribute. "The Newport Beach Film Festival is thrilled to honor Emmy Rossum for her remarkable performance in Furious," Schwenk stated. "From the opera stage to the screen to the director’s chair, Emmy has built a career defined by range and fearlessness. We are proud to celebrate her talent and the impact of her work."
A Multi-Decade Career in Music, Film, and Television
Rossum, 40, established her performing career early in life, joining the Metropolitan Opera at seven years old. She transitioned to prominent film work in the early 2000s, appearing in Clint Eastwood's 2003 mystery drama Mystic River before starring in the 2004 cinematic adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. Her performance in the latter earned her a Critics Choice Award as well as a nomination for a Golden Globe Award.
On television, Rossum spent nearly a decade playing Fiona Gallagher, the resilient eldest sibling caring for her dysfunctional family on the Paul Abbott and John Wells drama series Shameless. Across her nine seasons on the program from 2011 to 2019, she received two Critics Choice Award nominations alongside co-star William H. Macy. In the years following her departure from Shameless, she starred in the limited series Angelyne in 2022 and The Crowded Room in 2024.
Impact and Early Renewal for 'Furious'
Rossum's current work on Furious represents a significant creative milestone, where she also acts as an executive producer through her production company, Composition 8. The psychological drama has generated substantial industry buzz, positioning Rossum as a strong contender for future major award nominations. Demonstrating early confidence in the project, the network renewed the drama for a second season before the initial season had concluded its run.
The upcoming live recording also adds Rossum to the roster of prominent figures featured on the Awards Chatter podcast, which recently marked 11 years in production and is nearing its 700th installment. Previous festival guests who have taped live episodes at the Newport Beach Film Festival include Adam Sandler, Eddie Redmayne, Ewan McGregor, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Ronson, and Jacob Elordi, while figures such as Kate Hudson, Mindy Kaling, Adam Brody, Sam Rockwell, and Seth MacFarlane have recorded live installments for the related television event.
Rossum will officially accept her honor when the Newport Beach Film Festival convenes its full lineup of screenings, panels, and celebrations across its mid-October schedule.
