Every down of the championship matchup will be translated into an animated sequence, swapping actual players for on-screen digital avatars. Alongside these digital player models, notable franchise figures will enter the broadcast during key sequences, accompanied by references to the films. Original C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels has officially signed on to participate, with the golden protocol droid slated to serve in a prominent capacity throughout the broadcast.

Next Gen Stats and Tracking Technology

To translate real-world gridiron action into real-time animation, Disney is pairing the NFL's Next Gen Stats tracking engine with optical data capture from Sony's Hawk-Eye Innovations. The combination enables the broadcast to mirror athlete movements and ball locations dynamically without interrupting the live flow of play.

The company has indicated that additional operational specifics regarding the presentation—including the lineup of commentators, visual environments, and supplementary character appearances—will be disclosed in the coming weeks.

Disney has previously experimented with animated youth broadcasts across various professional sports properties, including projects featuring characters from "Toy Story," "Big City Greens," and Marvel superheroes for games across the NFL, NHL, and NBA. The concept also mirrors earlier league efforts, such as the kids-oriented Super Bowl broadcast delivered by the company previously known as Paramount on Nickelodeon in 2024.

Disney's Multi-Platform Super Bowl Mega-Cast

Super Bowl LXI marks the first time in roughly two decades that Disney has held broadcast rights to the NFL's championship event. The animated alternate stream forms just one component of an expansive multi-network strategy planned for the day.

In addition to traditional flagship game coverage airing on ABC and ESPN, Disney's broadcast lineup features several specialized viewing tracks:

- "Field Pass," an alternative commentary broadcast helmed by host Pat McAfee.

- The "ManningCast," fronted by Super Bowl champions Peyton Manning and Eli Manning, airing on ESPN2.

- "Playbook," an analytical, statistics-oriented telecast broadcast on NFL Network, featuring a talent roster to be named at a later date.

- A dedicated Spanish-language broadcast delivered via ESPN Deportes.

Deepening NFL Ties and Franchise Milestones

Disney's expansive Super Bowl approach stems from an extensive broadcast agreement signed with the NFL in 2021, an arrangement that retains "Monday Night Football" on ESPN through the 2033 season. Corporate relations between the league and the media conglomerate have further solidified since, with the NFL taking a 10% equity stake in ESPN as part of an agreement moving NFL Network and NFL RedZone under the ESPN corporate portfolio.

The timing of the broadcast also coincides with a milestone anniversary for Lucasfilm. Just five days after the animated Super Bowl telecast, Lucasfilm will begin marking the 50th anniversary of the franchise by re-releasing a restored theatrical version of the original 1977 "Star Wars" feature in cinemas starting Friday, February 19, 2027.
