The small-screen adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ fantasy phenomenon is moving forward as Amazon MGM Studios builds out the core creative lineup and principal cast for its upcoming television adaptation of "Fourth Wing." First optioned in 2023 following the rapid commercial success of Yarros' debut novel in The Empyrean series, the project was officially granted a series order in May 2026.

The project experienced several leadership transitions behind the camera before locking in its showrunner. Moira Walley-Beckett, known for her work on "Breaking Bad" and "Anne with an E," was initially selected to lead the series. Later, "WandaVision" and "Agatha All Along" creator Jac Schaeffer entered talks to write, executive produce, and run the show after entering an overall pact with Amazon MGM Studios. Ultimately, Meredith Averill, an executive producer on "Wednesday" Season 2, took the reins. After initial final negotiations in late September, Averill was officially confirmed as the showrunner during Amazon's 2026 Upfronts presentation.

Casting the Basgiath War College Cadets

Central to the adaptation are the two key figures from Yarros' fantasy world. Esther McGregor has been cast to portray the 20-year-old protagonist, Violet Sorrengail. Violet is pushed into the perilous life of a dragon rider at the direction of her mother, a high-ranking military General in the nation of Navarre, leaving her intended path as a Scribe behind. The story follows her survival at the cutthroat Basgiath War College, an institution operating under a ruthless "Graduate or Die" structure.

Opposite McGregor, Emilio Sakraya has been tapped to star as Xaden Riorson, the enigmatic figure whose intense dynamic with Violet forms a central pillar of the narrative. Beyond the physical perils of dragon riding and military training, the story incorporates Violet navigating life with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a condition affecting connective tissue that mirrors the real-life diagnosis of author Rebecca Yarros.

Expanding The Empyrean Universe

The "Fourth Wing" adaptation is poised to draw from a wider literary franchise that continues to expand. The source material kicked off a planned five-novel arc, quickly followed by the November 2023 release of "Iron Flame." The third book in the sequence, "Onyx Storm," debuted on January 21, 2025, alongside teases from Yarros regarding a transitional novella project ahead of the fourth volume.

Should the debut season of "Fourth Wing" prove successful on Prime Video, the production intends to potentially adapt each subsequent book in Yarros' Empyrean quintet into its own standalone season, charting the complete story across future television installments.
