Musk did not participate in the documentary and has publicly criticized the project on X. Instead, Gibney employs a CGI avatar reciting Musk's own public statements throughout the film. Promotional screenings over the opening weekend featured sold-out Q&A sessions with Gibney, producer Ronan Farrow, journalist Zoe Schiffer, and former conservative influencer Ashley St. Clair. St. Clair, who shares a child with Musk and appears on screen, previously rejected a financial settlement with the billionaire to avoid signing a non-disclosure agreement.

Big Tech Cinema and the Arrival of Aaron Sorkin's Facebook Follow-Up

The premiere of "Musk" aligns with an ongoing wave of cinematic projects scrutinizing modern technology titans. This same weekend, Sony Pictures released Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Reckoning" nationwide, serving as a direct follow-up to "The Social Network" by examining darker controversies surrounding Facebook under founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Furthering the industry's focus on tech executives and artificial intelligence, Luca Guadagnino’s "Artificial" recently held its world premiere at the New York Film Festival. That project presents a critical look at OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman ahead of its planned theatrical release in December.

Chris Rock Steps Back Behind the Camera with 'Misty Green'

A24 has debuted "Misty Green," directed by Chris Rock, in six theaters across New York and Los Angeles. The indie drama marks Rock's first directorial effort in more than a decade following its initial premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Screening at Lincoln Square, Alamo, and Union Square in Manhattan, as well as The Grove, Burbank, and Century City in Southern California, the film stars Rosalind Eleazar in her first lead feature role. Eleazar portrays an actress struggling to rebuild her momentum and secure a second chance in the industry years after achieving her initial Hollywood breakthrough.

Cannes Sensation 'Fjord' and 'Winter of the Crow' Expand Arthouse Slate

Neon has brought director Cristian Mungiu’s "Fjord" to four theaters split between New York and Los Angeles. The film earned the Palme d'Or and the FIPRESCI Award at the Cannes Film Festival, marking Mungiu's second Palme d'Or and the seventh consecutive Cannes top-prize win distributed by Neon. Romania has also chosen the drama as its official selection for Best International Feature at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Starring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve, "Fjord" sits at a 91% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The narrative follows a devout Romanian-Norwegian family whose integration into a remote fjord community faces local scrutiny when an adolescent child arrives at school with physical bruises, prompting community concern regarding the family's traditional parenting.

Alongside these limited launches, Cohen Media Group deployed "Winter of the Crow" across 63 screens in more than 30 markets, utilizing a combination of AMC, Landmark, and independent venues. Directed and co-written by Kasia Adamik from an Olga Tokarczuk short story, the 1981-set thriller stars Lesley Manville as a British professor caught in Warsaw during the imposition of martial law. Executive produced by Agnieszka Holland, the title holds a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score from 16 reviews.

As the fall film calendar progresses, independent distributors will continue scaling these specialty rollouts into wider domestic markets ahead of the upcoming awards season.
