adele-first-song-was-inspired-by-a-massive-anti-war-protest

Adele has revealed the surprising story behind her debut single “Hometown Glory”, which she wrote when she was only 16 years old. The singer said that the song was influenced by her participation in a huge demonstration against the Iraq War in 2003.

A Sense of Power and Pride

In an interview with Desert Island Discs on Sunday, Adele shared how she felt a sense of power and pride when she joined a million other people in the streets of London to protest against the war. She said that she was mesmerized by the crowd and soaked in the atmosphere.

“That night, when we got back and I got home, I wrote it. It was very profound and I was very proud to walk those streets with a million other people,” she said.

The song, which captures the bittersweet beauty of London life, was the first proper track that Adele ever wrote. She said that she wrote it on guitar and got her friend at school to transpose it onto piano.

A Nostalgic Performance

Adele also said that the song has become more emotional for her over the years, as it reminds her of how much has happened since she wrote it. She said that it is still one of her favorites to this day.

She performed the song on her BBC special with Graham Norton, along with another track from her new album 25, called “Million Years Ago”. The song is also about nostalgia and missing the past.

Adele’s 25 has broken records around the world, selling over 5 million copies in the US and over 2 million copies in the UK in its first week. The album features the hit single “Hello”, which has topped the charts in over 30 countries.
