Victor Wembanyama played the best game of his life on Wednesday night. The San Antonio Spurs star scored a career-high 52 points, grabbed a career-high 24 rebounds and blocked eight shots as the Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks 112-111 at the Frost Bank Center.

He did it while feeling sick. He did it after rolling his ankle in the fourth quarter. And he did it with the game on the line, sinking the winning free throw with 24.2 seconds left.

A first half like nothing the NBA has seen in 30 years

Wembanyama set the tone early. He had 29 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and two steals by half-time. No player in the NBA's play-by-play era, which began in 1996-97, had ever put up at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a single half before.

He kept going after the break. His final line read 52 points on 16-of-28 shooting, 24 rebounds, eight blocks, two assists and two steals in 34 minutes. He went 19-of-23 from the free-throw line and threw down seven dunks. The Spurs were plus-23 with him on the floor.

The finish: ankle scare, missed free throws, then the winner

The night nearly fell apart late. Wembanyama rolled his ankle in the fourth quarter and left the game with 9:11 still to play. He came back, and the Spurs needed every bit of him. Dallas kept coming, and the game was still in doubt in the last minute.

Wembanyama grabbed two putbacks in the final 2:39. He missed his first three free throws in the last 2:10. Then, with 24 seconds left, he made one. That was the last point of the night, and it was enough. His own verdict after the game was short: he can still do more.

Why this one goes in the record books

The numbers put Wembanyama next to names from another era. He is the first player with at least 50 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks in a game since Bob McAdoo in 1974. He is the first Spurs player ever to score 50 points and grab 20 rebounds in the same game. And his eight blocks are the most by any player in a 50-point game since blocks became an official stat in 1973-74.

Go one step further and the list gets even shorter. Only two players in NBA history have had 50 points, 20 rebounds and 10 combined steals and blocks in a game: Wilt Chamberlain and Victor Wembanyama.

His last career high was 50 points, back in 2024. This was the next step up, and it came against a rival, in a one-point game, while he was fighting a virus.

The rest of the Spurs stepped up too

Dylan Harper scored 21 points for San Antonio. Stephon Castle had 17 points and 10 rebounds. De'Aaron Fox added 10. For Dallas, Cooper Flagg had 19 points and 10 rebounds, but the Mavericks fell to 4-4 with a second straight loss.

The win was San Antonio's sixth in a row. The Spurs are now 6-2, and the early MVP talk has a new name in it. Wembanyama sits right there with Luka Doncic, whose own 45-point night for the Lakers made headlines this week.

It has been a wild week in the NBA all round. LeBron James made news for a very different reason when he sipped a fan's wine mid-game. Wembanyama's night was the basketball kind of wild: the kind that ends up in the record books.
