Rocky is back in theaters today, fifty years after it made Sylvester Stallone a star. He turned 80 in July. His memoir came out in September. And a film about how he made Rocky opens in theaters this month. Nobody in Hollywood has had a run quite like his.
He was a broke actor who wrote a script in three days and refused to sell it unless he could star in it. That bet made him one of the biggest movie stars in the world. It also made him Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, two of the most famous characters in film history. This is how he got here.
The kid nobody bet on
Stallone was born Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone on July 6, 1946, in Hell's Kitchen, New York City. His mother Jackie was an astrologer. His father Frank was a hairdresser who had come to America from Italy. His younger brother Frank became an actor and musician.
His birth did not go well. The doctors had to use forceps, and a nerve in his face was cut. The lower left side of his face was left partly paralysed. It gave him his slurred speech and his snarl. Kids bullied him for it. He answered with bodybuilding and acting.
School was no easier. A guidance counsellor once told his mother her son was suited to running a sorting machine. Stallone did not agree. He went to school in Philadelphia and Maryland, spent two years at the American College of Switzerland, then studied drama at the University of Miami. He left without a degree. The university gave him one in 1998, in exchange for his life's work.
Broke in New York
New York in the early 1970s was hard. Stallone took small stage and film parts and odd jobs. He cleaned a zoo. He worked as a theater usher and got fired for scalping tickets. His first starring role came in a low-budget adult film in 1970. He was paid $200 for two days' work. He has said he took it because he was broke and homeless. He slept for three weeks in the Port Authority bus terminal.
Things moved slowly. He had small parts in M*A*S*H, Bananas and Klute, and he tried out as an extra in The Godfather and did not get it. His first proper lead came in The Lords of Flatbush in 1974. A year later he played a supporting part in Death Race 2000. He was 29, and still waiting for his break.
Three days, one script, no sale without the part
On March 24, 1975, Stallone watched Muhammad Ali fight Chuck Wepner. Wepner, a nobody, went the distance. That night Stallone went home and started writing. Three days later he had the first draft of Rocky.
He tried to sell it, but only on his terms. He would play Rocky Balboa himself. The producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff offered him $350,000 for the script. They had other actors in mind, like Robert Redford and Burt Reynolds. Stallone said no. In the end they agreed, on a much smaller budget of about $960,000.
Rocky opened on November 20, 1976. It earned around $225 million and was the highest-grossing film of the year. It picked up ten Oscar nominations. Stallone was nominated twice himself, for Best Actor and for Best Original Screenplay. The film won three Oscars, including Best Picture. The steps he runs up in the film, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, are still called the Rocky Steps.

Rambo, and the biggest star in the world
Rocky II followed in 1979, and Stallone directed it. He kept going. Rocky III came in 1982, the same year he played John Rambo for the first time in First Blood. Rambo was a Vietnam veteran, a former Green Beret, and Stallone rewrote much of the script from David Morell's novel. Two more Rambo films followed in the 1980s, and Rocky IV in 1985.
By the mid-1980s he was one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. The hits kept coming: Cobra, Over the Top, Tango & Cash, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man. There were misses too. Rhinestone flopped. He has since said Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot was one of his worst, and that Arnold Schwarzenegger talked him into it by pretending he wanted the part himself.
The 1990s slowed him down. Cop Land in 1997 was the exception. He put on weight for the part of a small-town sheriff, and won some of his best reviews in years.

Stallone did not fade away. In 2006 he brought Rocky back in Rocky Balboa, which he wrote and directed. In 2008 he brought Rambo back too. Then came The Expendables in 2010, a team-up of action stars he put together himself, with two sequels and a fourth film in 2023. He also made Escape Plan with Schwarzenegger in 2013.
The biggest comeback came in 2015. In Creed, Stallone played an older Rocky training the son of Apollo Creed. He won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and earned his third Oscar nomination, almost forty years after his first two. He played Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017 and Vol. 3 in 2023, and starred in Samaritan, a superhero film, in 2022.
