The Met Gala has a new theme for 2027, and it is all about the clothes we wear every day. The Costume Institute announced on Thursday, 5 November that next spring's exhibition will be called "extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday".

The gala itself takes place on Monday, 3 May 2027, the first Monday in May as always. The exhibition then opens to the public on 9 May 2027 and runs until 9 January 2028.

What the show is about

The exhibition will look at everyday clothes in a new light. Think T-shirts, jeans, puffer jackets, raincoats and sweatshirts. The kind of things most of us wear without a second thought, turned into high fashion by the world's best designers.

It will also look at humble materials. Paper, plastic and aluminium are all in the mix, shaped into wearable art. The idea is to show how designers take the plain and the ordinary and make something surprising out of it.

Curator in charge Andrew Bolton, who is putting the show together with Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben, told Vogue the exhibition will ask visitors "to see the everyday anew". It comes at the subject from two sides. First, how designers have taken classic, familiar garments and lifted them onto the runway. Second, how throwaway materials get turned into fashion.

One section, called "Familiar Forms", will look at designers' takes on common items. It includes work by the late Virgil Abloh, Jonathan Anderson for Loewe, Pierpaolo Piccioli's collections for Moncler, and designs from Burberry.

Why the theme changed

The new theme replaces a very different plan. The Met had announced on 31 July that the 2027 show would be "John Galliano: Horizons", a retrospective of the British designer. It would only have been the third time a living designer was the focus of the spring exhibition.

Then, on 31 August, the museum and Galliano said together that the show would not go ahead. The decision followed public backlash over Galliano's past remarks. Bolton has since said he had no backup plan ready, and the team built the new theme from scratch in about two months.

The hosts and co-chairs for the 2027 gala have not been announced yet, and neither has the dress code. Moncler is named as a design sponsor. Those details will follow in the coming months.

What to expect on the night

Fashion's biggest night usually sets the tone for the year ahead, and this theme gives the guests plenty of room to play. A T-shirt or a raincoat sounds simple, but on the Met steps, simple rarely stays simple. Expect denim, plastic and paper to show up in ways nobody has seen before.

Some fans had hoped the Met would honour the late Bob Mackie instead, after his recent passing. That did not happen, but the new theme still nods to his world. Mackie built his name on turning everyday glamour into show-stopping clothes, and this show is about the same idea from the other direction.

The Met Gala is not the only big fashion moment on the calendar this season. Heidi Klum's towering hand costume stole the show at her 25th annual Halloween party last weekend. Harry Styles also made headlines with his two-night Halloween run, dressing as Elvis on night one and a pizza rat on night two. And Kim Kardashian, a Met Gala regular, has built a career on turning a red-carpet look into a talking point.
