Julia Garner is about to play the hardest role of her career. In Netflix's The Altruists, which streams from November 19, she plays Caroline Ellison, the girlfriend and business partner of Sam Bankman-Fried in the multi-billion-dollar crypto fraud story. She talked about it this morning on CBS News Sunday Morning, with correspondent Anthony Mason.
Garner called it the hardest job she has ever done. She also said she is drawn to playing "the most unhinged people". It fits. She has spent fifteen years playing women on the edge: a teen runaway, a con artist, a mob wife, a fraudster. Now, at 32, she is one of the most respected actors of her generation, with three Emmys already on her shelf.
It was a big weekend for Saturday Night Live too. Druski hosted last night, with The Strokes playing two new songs as musical guests.
The shy kid from Riverdale who took acting lessons at 15
Julia Garner was born on February 1, 1994, in the Riverdale neighbourhood of the Bronx, New York. Her mother, Tamar Gingold, is a therapist who once acted and did comedy in Israel. Her father, Thomas Garner, is a painter and an art teacher from Ohio. Her older sister Anna is an artist. Garner identifies as Jewish through her mother, and she understands Hebrew, though she says she is not fluent.
She was a shy kid. At 15 she started taking acting lessons to get over it. The lessons worked. She went to Eagle Hill School in Greenwich, Connecticut, and by 17 she was on a film set. Her first film was Martha Marcy May Marlene in 2011, where she played Sarah. She was still a teenager, and critics were already noticing her.
Small parts followed fast. She played a girl in a car in David Chase's Not Fade Away in 2012, a role Chase wrote just for her. The same year she had her first lead role, in Electrick Children. Then came horror: The Last Exorcism Part II and We Are What We Are in 2013, and a turn as Marcie in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For in 2014. It was her first time acting against a green screen.

Ruth Langmore changed everything
In 2017 Garner joined Ozark, Netflix's crime drama with Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. She played Ruth Langmore, a teenager from a family of small-time criminals who becomes the show's beating heart. Ruth was foul-mouthed, fearless and loyal to a fault. Garner played her for four seasons, until 2022.
The role made her a star. She won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series three times: in 2019, 2020 and 2022. She also won a Golden Globe for the role in 2023. Ruth's story ended in tragedy, but the performance is the one Garner will always be known for first.
Television kept her busy between films. She had a recurring role in The Americans from 2015 to 2018, played Michelle Jones in the Waco miniseries in 2018, and was Ellie in Netflix's Maniac the same year. In Dirty John, from 2018 to 2019, she played Terra Newell, the daughter of Connie Britton's character. Then, in 2022, came Inventing Anna.

Inventing Anna, and a year of three big films
Inventing Anna was Shonda Rhimes' Netflix miniseries about Anna Sorokin, the fake heiress who conned New York's rich and famous. Garner played Anna herself, complete with the strange accent and the designer clothes. The show came out in February 2022, and it earned her Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress.
Then came 2025, her biggest year on film yet. She played Charlotte Lovell in Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man, and Justine Gandy in Zach Cregger's horror hit Weapons. She also joined the Marvel universe as Shalla-Bal, a version of the Silver Surfer, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Three very different films, all in one year, all with her at the centre of them.
She is not slowing down. Along with The Altruists, her company Alma Margo has a first-look deal with Tomorrow Studios, and she is an executive producer on the series. She was also chosen by Madonna to play the singer in a biopic, a project that was put on hold and later restarted. In September 2026 she covered ELLE magazine, talking about the role and her return to New York.

Family, marriage and what she is worth
Garner married Mark Foster, the lead singer of Foster the People, in December 2019. They wed at New York City Hall, eight months after they got engaged. In July 2026 it was announced that they had separated. She keeps her private life quiet, and little else has been said about it in public.
Her net worth is estimated at about $4 million. That is an estimate, not a filed figure, and other guesses run from $2 million to $5 million. Most of it comes from Ozark and Inventing Anna, her film work, her production company and brand work with fashion houses like Gucci. She has never chased the celebrity side of fame. She rarely gives interviews, and when she does, she talks about the work.
