The British adaptation of "Saturday Night Live" set its sights across the Atlantic this weekend, delivering a sharp critique of comedian Shane Gillis following his contentious hosting stint on the American flagship series. During the program's signature "Weekend Update" segment, co-host Ania Magliano singled out Gillis over remarks made during his opening routine and a broadcast profanity violation.

Weekend Update Takes Direct Aim at Gillis

The satire unfolded during the latest broadcast of "SNL U.K.," where the "Weekend Update" desk covered a wide range of current events. Prior to addressing Gillis, the segment took satirical aim at diverse news items, including the recently dismissed press secretary for U.S. President Donald Trump and bizarre public claims regarding King Charles.

The desk then shifted focus directly to Gillis, whose recent hosting duties on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" generated widespread backlash. Magliano used her platform to directly mock the substance of Gillis's monologue as well as an accidental expletive he delivered during the live American broadcast.

Monologue Comments Prompted Immediate Backlash

Gillis sparked controversy during his opening monologue by aiming jokes at women's activewear, using misogynistic language that quickly drew public criticism. Describing women at fitness centers, Gillis had commented during his set, "I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now? You’ve seen the shorts? They’re those neon, like, artificial bait-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look."

Magliano responded to the routine by tying it into an international news story. "A ride operator at Munich Oktoberfest was praised for giving out free cycling shorts to female riders," she stated during the segment. "Wearing the gym shorts will protect women from being upskirted, but it does make them vulnerable to something much worse."

At that punchline, a production still of Gillis delivering his monologue appeared on the screen beside her, which drew immediate laughter from the live studio audience in attendance.

Different Broadcast Standards Highlighted

Beyond addressing the content of his jokes, Magliano took the opportunity to highlight the differing broadcast regulations governing television in the United Kingdom versus the United States. During his NBC appearance, Gillis inadvertently dropped the f-bomb on the air, running afoul of strict standards enforced by the American broadcast network.

Because British television operates under distinct broadcasting rules that permit stronger language, Magliano delivered a pointed and profane punchline capitalizing on the discrepancy.

"Last week on 'SNL,' comedian Shane Gillis also caused controversy by dropping the f-bomb," Magliano told viewers. "Oh, Shane. You’re not allowed to say that, you stupid fucking cunt."

Cross-Atlantic Satire and Broadcast Rules

The moment underscored how the British counterpart is forging its own identity by engaging with the broader franchise's controversies while utilizing the looser linguistic allowances of its home territory. Gillis has not publicly issued a response to the "SNL U.K." segment.
