Quentin Tarantino has officially finished writing the screenplay for his highly anticipated tenth feature film, though moviegoers will have to wait longer before the project enters production. The acclaimed filmmaker revealed that while the script is complete and to his liking, he intends to delay work on the prospective movie until after he wraps up his forthcoming stage commitment in London and takes personal time off.

Tarantino Shares Career Timeline on 'The Graham Norton Show'

The update arrived during Tarantino's appearance on "The Graham Norton Show," marking his first visit to the British talk program in more than ten years. He shared the couch with fellow guests Gemma Chan, Colin Farrell, and Ellen DeGeneres to discuss his creative plans and upcoming theater ventures.

Tarantino addressed his longtime assertion that he intends to retire from directing feature films once he completes his tenth project. Despite having a new screenplay ready, he clarified that diving immediately into a movie set is not his current priority.

“I’ve written a script that I really like, but I want to do the play and see who I am; then I’ll then go back and spend time with my family and live a little and then see what I want to do,” Tarantino said during the broadcast.

Stage Debut with 'The Popinjay Cavalier' Takes Priority

Before returning to cinema, Tarantino's creative energy is focused entirely on his theatrical project, "The Popinjay Cavalier." The production originally began life in development as a film screenplay before Tarantino determined that its narrative structure was far better suited for the live stage.

Described as a "swashbuckling comedy," the play will feature actor Sacha Baron Cohen in the starring role. The production is scheduled to begin preview performances in late February before officially opening in March at the Phoenix Theatre in London's West End.

When the theater run was originally announced, Tarantino expressed enthusiasm for the platform, stating he was keen to deliver an entertaining experience to theatergoers. The production is slated for a strictly limited three-month engagement that will run through June 13.

Looking Back at 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

Tarantino's film output has remained paused since the 2019 release of his ninth feature, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." That production featured an ensemble cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Margaret Qualley, capturing industry life in 1969 Los Angeles.

The 2019 film was a major critical and commercial success, garnering numerous Academy Award nominations. Pitt took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and the production team of Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh earned the Oscar for Best Production Design. Tarantino himself received nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, while DiCaprio earned a Best Actor nod.

With "The Popinjay Cavalier" set to keep Tarantino occupied in London through June 13, and family downtime planned immediately afterward, any tangible production steps regarding his tenth movie script will remain paused until his theatrical run and subsequent hiatus conclude.
