The National Football League is broadening its pop-culture footprint onto the sidelines, launching an inaugural Celebrity Guest Cheerleader initiative during a recent Monday Night Football showdown at SoFi Stadium. Comedian and actress Atsuko Okatsuka served as the pioneer participant, taking the turf alongside the Los Angeles Rams cheerleading squad during their regular-season game against the Buffalo Bills.

The routine took place just prior to halftime, marking the first time in nearly two decades that Okatsuka performed organized cheerleading. Stepping out before a sold-out stadium audience, the Los Angeles native cartwheeled into formation and executed roughly 45 seconds of fast-paced choreography to the song "Animal" by Katseye.
From Stand-Up Material to the Sidelines
The collaboration traces directly back to Okatsuka's 2025 Hulu comedy special, "Father." In the special, she performed a bit about how former cheerleaders quietly blend into everyday society, using audience call-and-response and deconstructing the persistent optimism required to pump up a crowd.
That comedy set caught the attention of league and team organizers. Kurt Gies, director of social media and influencers for the Los Angeles Rams, explained that the team continually seeks intersections between athletics and culture. Okatsuka's local roots and high school cheerleading background made her a natural fit for the launch.
The performance also drew heavily on her past experience at Venice High School, where she was once voted "Most Spirited." Okatsuka admitted she was nervous before heading out through the tunnel, but noted her muscle memory surfaced as soon as the routine started.
Rehearsals and Custom Game-Day Styling
Transitioning from stand-up comedy to high-energy choreography required extensive prep. Okatsuka initially practiced the routine independently at home before joining the Rams squad during their regular weekly rehearsals.
She credited the squad members with helping build her confidence ahead of the live stadium appearance. The Rams organization also presented her with a customized game-day outfit. Okatsuka worked alongside her stylist to incorporate structured shoulders reminiscent of player pads while opting for fuller coverage than the traditional squad attire.
Following the performance, Okatsuka joked about the physical demands of returning to dance after so many years, expressing satisfaction with executing the routine successfully. While she retained the custom uniform, she noted it would remain backstage rather than serve as stage wear for her upcoming comedy special at the United Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.
Social Media Reach and Future NFL Activations
The initiative generated immediate traction across social channels. An initial Instagram post confirming Okatsuka's appearance surpassed 1 million views, while footage of the halftime performance subsequently accumulated more than 4 million views and over 200,000 engagements, establishing it as one of the franchise's top social posts of the season.
The cheerleading debut expands on the NFL's ongoing "Celebrity Guest" programming. Introduced last year, the concept previously placed prominent actors, musicians, and athletes into functional game-day roles as sideline photographers. Previous participants in that effort have included Jerry Rice, Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Method Man, Common, Joel McHale, Ken Griffey Jr., Benson Boone, and Marshawn Lynch.
Rob Santini, NFL vice president of global culture, social, and entertainment, highlighted the effort as part of a broader strategy to connect with culture-oriented audiences by integrating creative personalities directly into game-day operations.
League plans indicate that the next installment of the Celebrity Guest Cheerleader program will roll out during upcoming NFL holiday broadcasts. Okatsuka pitched several potential future participants with cheerleading or high-energy backgrounds, suggesting names such as comic and former competitive cheerleader Shapel Lacey, Backstreet Boys member AJ McLean, and recording artist Lil Jon.
