John Gore Studios, the parent company of legendary British production house Hammer Films, has acquired the complete rights to the literary works of Dame Susan Hill. The comprehensive deal opens the door for a wave of new screen and stage projects adapted from Hill's extensive catalog, most notably her iconic gothic ghost story, "The Woman in Black."

A Historic Horror Partnership Reignited
The acquisition marks a major reunion between Hill's stories and Hammer Films. The studio famously produced the 2012 film adaptation of "The Woman in Black," which starred Daniel Radcliffe in his first major film role following the conclusion of the Harry Potter franchise. That feature grossed $127.7 million worldwide, setting a milestone as the highest-earning British horror production in two decades and delivering Hammer's largest United States opening weekend in its history.
First published as a novella in 1983, "The Woman in Black" remains one of the defining ghost stories of the modern era. Beyond its cinematic success, the story gained international renown through its West End stage adaptation, which frightened London audiences across a 33-year theatrical run.
Expanding Beyond The Woman in Black
While "The Woman in Black" is Hill's most prominent title, the agreement encompasses the author's entire bibliography spanning more than 60 years. Her varied body of work features literary fiction, crime novels, children's books, memoirs, and radio plays. Hill's prestigious career includes a Booker Prize nomination in 1972 for her novel "The Bird of Night," alongside honors such as the Somerset Maugham Award, the Whitbread Novel Award, and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
"For any author, it’s heartening to see their stories continue to find new life," Hill said of the acquisition. She expressed enthusiasm for the new chapter, noting that John Gore Studios blends a respect for heritage with the ability to introduce classic narratives to broader audiences.
Executive Leadership and Strategy for the Franchise
The deal was spearheaded by Anouska Spiers, Chief Operating Officer of John Gore Studios, alongside Caroline Michel, literary agent and CEO of Peters Fraser and Dunlop (PFD). Michel, who represents Hill, will continue to represent John Gore Studios as the rights holder. Spiers will manage the portfolio and overall exploitation strategy, while Chief Creative Officer Francis Hopkinson will oversee development with the studio's creative team.
Under the framework of the agreement, Hill will remain actively involved in upcoming adaptations, serving as an executive producer on new titles and participating in development strategy. The company plans to explore film and television opportunities as well as prospective theatrical stagings where existing rights allow.
"Susan Hill is one of Britain’s most distinctive literary voices, and it is a privilege to become a custodian of such an extraordinary body of work," stated John Gore, founder and executive chairman of John Gore Studios. Gore emphasized that future interpretations will prioritize craftsmanship and suspense while highlighting the original source material.
Hammer Films' Broader Revival Efforts
John Gore Studios acquired Hammer Films in late 2023 under the direction of theater mogul John Gore. Since the purchase, the studio has focused on restoring Hammer's historic film library in 4K resolution. In addition to securing Hill's catalog, Gore has previously stated intentions to develop new screen adaptations based on Hammer's classic monster properties, including Frankenstein and Dracula.
With Hill's multi-genre portfolio now integrated into the studio's pipeline, development teams will begin evaluating the author's extensive catalog to determine which titles will move forward first for film, television, and stage.
